NAPLAN Year 3: format and timing
ACARA lists four domains: Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. Writing uses either a narrative or persuasive prompt. Reading asks students to interpret texts; conventions assesses spelling, grammar and punctuation; numeracy assesses mathematical understanding and reasoning.
| Domain | Year 3 |
|---|---|
| Writing | 40 minutes |
| Reading | 45 minutes |
| Conventions of Language | 45 minutes |
| Numeracy | 45 minutes |
Year 3 writing is on paper. The other domains use the online platform. Our printable papers are fixed sets, not the adaptive online test, and do not reproduce its interactive features. Use ACARA’s public demonstration site for platform familiarisation.
How to use practice tests without overdoing it
- Start with a short untimed session. Read the instructions together, then let your child attempt the questions independently. Ask them to explain one answer before looking at the worked solution.
- Review the first paper using its worked solutions. Choose one or two skills to practise in normal schoolwork.
- Return to the second paper later. Try a timed session when comfortable, using the instructions printed on the paper.
- For writing, plan one response, write it independently, then compare it with the guide. Revise one paragraph rather than memorising an answer.
ACARA says the best preparation is teaching the curriculum. Practice helps with familiarity and identifying gaps; it does not replace classroom learning or guarantee a result. A score on these PDFs is not a NAPLAN proficiency level.
