VCE Mathematical Methods practice exam guide
A useful VCE Mathematical Methods practice exam is more than a score. Use it to identify the skills to revisit, improve written working and build a realistic approach to time.
Start with the current study design
VCAA separates examinations relating to the current study design from those for earlier designs. Start at its Mathematical Methods assessment page for the examination specifications, sample questions, formula sheet, past exams and assessment reports. Check the version before using an older paper.
Practise both exam settings
Exam 1 and Exam 2 need different preparation. Use the current specifications to check permitted equipment, reading time, writing time and response requirements. For technology-free work, practise exact values and algebraic working without relying on a calculator. For technology-supported work, practise interpreting results and showing the steps that answer the question.
A four-step revision session
- Attempt: choose a paper and follow its instructions. Put away solutions until the end.
- Mark: compare the working, not just the final answer. Distinguish a concept gap, an algebra slip and an incomplete explanation.
- Repair: revisit the relevant syllabus skill and do a few focused questions. Write a corrected solution from a blank page.
- Recheck: try a different question later without notes. Keep the second practice set for a later progress check.
What to record after marking
Use a three-column error log: skill, reason for the error, and next action. For a function question, the action might be checking a domain restriction; for probability, defining the event before calculating. Write a concrete action rather than simply “revise more”.
Exam Pulse practice material
Our VCE page describes the Mathematical Methods practice pack, including two full sets covering Exam 1 and Exam 2, marking guides and question rationales. Check its samples and contents to decide whether it complements your school revision.

Questions and answers
Where can I find VCAA Mathematical Methods exam resources?
VCAA’s Mathematical Methods assessment page links to the current examination specifications, sample materials, past examinations and assessment reports.
How should I review a practice exam?
Mark the working as well as the answer, group errors by skill, revise the cause of each error, then try a fresh question without notes.
